Peter Eardley Sarstedt [i] (x Dec 1941 – viii January 2017), briefly billed early in his career equally Peter Lincoln, was an English vocalizer-songwriter and instrumentalist. He was the blood brother of musicians Eden Kane and Clive Sarstedt.
Although his music was classified every bit pop, information technology more often than not encompassed ballads derived from traditional folk music rather than traditional rock and roll. He was all-time known for writing and performing the song "Where Practice Y'all Go To (My Lovely)?", which topped the Britain Singles Chart in 1969. Set to a "imitation European waltz tune"[1] and described as "a romantic novel in song",[2] information technology won an Ivor Novello Honour. The tape remained Sarstedt'due south biggest hit. He had one more striking single and one hit album just despite numerous releases never had chart success again.
He continued to tour throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, mainly in 1960s revival-blazon shows, until his retirement in 2010 due to ill wellness.[iii]
Early on life [edit]
Sarstedt was born in New Delhi in 1941 into a family unit long resident in Bharat. His ancestor Christian Ludwig Wilhelm Sarstedt, born in 1841 in Hanover, migrated to Bharat and died there in 1893. His male parent, Albert James Sarstedt, a civil servant in British Republic of india, married secondly Coral Byrne.[4] [5] [1] Both of his parents had trained equally classical musicians.[6]
Afterwards Indian independence from Uk in 1945, Sarstedt's parents managed a tea plantation in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, where Sarstedt attended Victoria Boys' School, a boarding school in Kurseong.[1] [seven] He later moved to Calcutta; in 1954, Sarstedt's father died and the family moved to England,[1] [7] settling in s London only before the rock 'n' ringlet nail.[1] [eight] The Sarstedt brothers started out performing skiffle[1] in a group known as the Fabulous V.[9]
Sarstedt was a younger brother of the 1960s pop star Eden Kane, for whom he was a backing vocaliser and briefly played bass, and an elder brother of pop singer Clive Sarstedt.[x]

Hitting recordings [edit]
Sarstedt was best known for his 1969 Great britain number one single, released on the United Artists label, "Where Exercise Y'all Go To (My Lovely)?", a portrait of a poor-born girl, Marie-Claire, who becomes a member of the European jet set.[3] [11] The song topped the nautical chart in 14 countries.[ane] It was also awarded the 1970 Ivor Novello Honour for Best Vocal Musically and Lyrically.[half-dozen] [12] He later cited his starting time married woman, Anita, as the inspiration for the song.[2]
His debut album in 1969 reached number eight on the British charts[9] and his follow-upward single, "Frozen Orange Juice", reached number 10 in the UK in 1969.[13] [xiv] However, subsequent releases failed to chart. Sarstedt's recorded songs include "Beirut", "Take Off Your Clothes" and "I Am a Cathedral".[six]
Some other selection from the anthology Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?, from which his single of the same championship had been released, was an instrumental called "Overture". Sarstedt composed it in collaboration with Ian Green and Ray Singer and it was subsequently used as the theme music for Keep America Cute'due south famous "Crying Indian" public service announcement, which starred Fe Eyes Cody.[ commendation needed ]
Touring [edit]
In the 1980s and 1990s, Sarstedt frequently toured the southern UK equally part of the "Solid Silver '60s" package tours,[15] having returned to England afterward several years residing in Kingdom of denmark.[4] [xvi] In the 1990s and 2000s, he continued to release new albums and bout. In 1997 he released the album England's Lane, which featured the follow-up to "Where Do You Become To", entitled "The Final of the Breed"[17] and in 2007 an album of new cloth called On Song. [18] He sang harmonies on "Don't Think Twice" and "The Final Matter on My Mind" on Canadian singer Peter Thompson's 2007 anthology, Taking a Swoop (Heart First).
Popular civilisation [edit]
New interest was sparked in his music later "Where Do You Become To" was used in the 2007 Wes Anderson films Hotel Chevalier and The Darjeeling Limited.[3] [1] In 2012 a compilation of songs called Highlights—the Demos was released.[xix]
Later recordings and touring [edit]
Sarstedt's last album, released in 2013, was titled Restless Heart.[13] It was produced by Ray Vocaliser and the single and accompanying video, "Valentine", directed and produced by Lara Singer, was released on Vocaliser Records.[20] A third instalment of "Where Do You Become To", continuing the story of Marie-Claire, to be titled "Bye Marie-Claire", did not materialize.[21] Sarstedt last performed alive in 2010.[22]
Personal life and expiry [edit]
Sarstedt married dentist Anita Atke in 1969 and moved to Denmark. The couple divorced 5 years later.[ii] His second married woman was Joanna Meill. From 2013 he lived in a retirement home in Sussex, England. He had progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), diagnosed in 2015, but originally misdiagnosed as dementia in 2013.[22] He died on 8 January 2017 at the age of 75.[3] [23] He is survived past his wife and two developed children.[2]

- Robin Sarstedt (born Clive Robin Sarstedt, 21 January 1944, in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India), the youngest brother,[25] [8] who made his recording debut as "Wes Sands" (recorded by Joe Meek), and so connected as "Clive Sands".[26] He had a striking in 1976 (as "Robin Sarstedt") with the Hoagy Carmichael cover "My Resistance Is Low."[8] [three]
